Kandy Esala Perahera: Sri Lanka's Greatest Festival

For ten nights each July or August, Kandy transforms. Drummers, whip-crackers, fire dancers, and dozens of ceremonially dressed elephants process through the streets in honour of the Sacred Tooth Relic, in a tradition that traces back centuries.

The final nights are the largest and most crowded, building toward the Randoli Perahera processions where the full spectacle — including the Maligawa Tusker carrying a replica of the relic casket — takes to the streets. If you want a more intimate experience, the earlier, smaller processions are worth considering instead.

Seating along the main route sells out well in advance, and hotel prices in Kandy climb sharply during the festival. Booking a viewing spot or hotel a few months ahead is not overcautious — it's close to necessary.

Arrive at your seats early. Streets close to traffic hours before the procession starts, and the atmosphere of the crowd gathering — food vendors, families staking out spots, the city humming with anticipation — is part of the experience in itself.
