Adam's Peak: A Spiritual Sunrise Hike Above the Clouds

Sri Pada — Adam's Peak — is climbed by pilgrims of four faiths, each honouring the sacred footprint at its summit in their own tradition. That shared devotion gives the mountain an atmosphere unlike any other hike in Sri Lanka, especially after dark during pilgrimage season.

Most hikers begin around midnight, climbing the illuminated stairway of over five thousand steps alongside a steady stream of pilgrims, tea stalls lit along the way offering sweet tea and biscuits to keep everyone going through the cold, steep final stretch.

The reward comes at the top: as the sun breaks the horizon, the mountain casts a perfect triangular shadow across the clouds below, a sight so precise it feels almost engineered. It lasts only a few minutes, so claim your spot on the summit well before dawn.

Pack warmer layers than you think you'll need. The lowlands stay tropical, but summit temperatures before sunrise can drop close to freezing, and the descent — done in daylight, legs already tired — is its own kind of workout.
